Alveare is envisioned as a new model for equitable urban living: an architecturally cohesive, multi-generational affordable housing community that transforms a full city block at the southern edge of Downtown Los Angeles into a vibrant neighborhood destination.
Conceived as three independent yet interconnected residential buildings, the project organizes family, senior, and permanent supportive housing around a shared open-space framework anchored by a central courtyard and publicly accessible pocket park. This communal landscape serves as the social heart of the development, encouraging interaction across generations while fostering a strong sense of identity, belonging, and collective stewardship.

The architectural composition balances autonomy and connection. Each building is tailored to the unique needs of its residents—larger family-oriented homes to the north, and more compact, service-enriched residences for seniors and formerly unhoused individuals to the south—while maintaining a unified design language that reinforces the project’s identity as a single community. Ground floor activation through at grade townhomes, a senior oriented health clinic, and transparent community spaces strengthens the relationship between residents and the surrounding South Park district, extending the project’s impact beyond its boundaries and contributing to the ongoing revitalization of the neighborhood.

More than housing, Alveare is conceived as resilient civic infrastructure—leveraging state-owned land to deliver long-term social, environmental, and urban value. Its recognition through Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) funding underscores the project’s commitment to sustainable, transit-oriented growth, supported by substantial public realm improvements including new sidewalks, illuminated crossings, and protected bicycle infrastructure. As the largest affordable housing development planned in Downtown Los Angeles, Alveare establishes a new benchmark for inclusive design: one that demonstrates how architecture can foster dignity, community, and opportunity at the scale of both the building and the city.
