Diablo Valley College serves more than 28,000 students each term with a wide variety of program options. The most critical element of the planning process was the extensive, iterative engagement with students, faculty, staff, leadership, and community members throughout the planning process. Collaboration was sought during each of the four planning phases, from the initial visioning to the analysis and draft and final plans.

Classroom and Labs Utilization rates were analyzed to evaluate the current and future needs of the spaces. Based on Fall 2023 data, we found that no building’s average Weekly Room Hours (WRH) meets the state target of 52.5 hours per week. This information is used to evaluate the usage needs of Classrooms and Labs across the college.

The “Big Ideas” establish a vision for a vibrant, connective campus that enhances the experience for students, faculty, staff, and the greater community.

Crafted through a collaborative process that incorporates insights from various stakeholders, the Campus Plan articulates a vision for a dynamic, interconnected campus aimed at enriching the experiences of all users. Rooted in the College priorities, this vision is structured around three essential components, each targeting distinct design interventions to meet the evolving needs of the Diablo Valley College community both now and in the future:

Pedestrian Circulation & Open Space

Universal accessibility and environmental stewardship are core commitments for Diablo Valley College and are integrated throughout the site recommendations through strategies to minimize the use of natural resources and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of physical abilities, can fully participate in campus life. These projects include the development of accessible pathways, buildings, and facilities, as well as the incorporation of inclusive design principles to create an environment that fosters equal opportunities for everyone.
