Steinberg Hart collaborated with Los Medanos College to enhance mobility and safety across the campus by addressing long-standing circulation challenges. A key component of this initiative is the development of a Loop Road, a long-desired feature by the campus community.

The Loop Road is designed to alleviate the inefficiencies caused by restricted traffic flow, while also improving safety and navigation for all users. This project extends beyond improving vehicular circulation, with a strong emphasis on pedestrian connectivity and open space enhancements. By creating vibrant hubs and linking key pedestrian pathways, the campus fosters a more cohesive and accessible environment.

The completion of the College Complex in 1974 symbolized LMC’s commitment to progressive educational ideals and community engagement. The architecture of the College Complex reflected and facilitated this innovative educational vision.

Given its size, the College Complex played a significant role in the Los Medanos College Facilities Plan. Several comprehensive analyses were performed on the Complex to understand its overall condition, structural and seismic challenges, space use and utilization, wayfinding, and the general sentiment of the community towards the building.

These evaluations revealed a divide within the community regarding the future of the Complex. To address this, planners developed two options for the College and District to guide discussions with the campus and broader community on the best path forward.

SPACE PROJECTIONS

The shift to online instruction during the Covid-19 pandemic left many College Complex spaces underutilized due to technological challenges and increased online course offerings. Space projection revealed significant underutilized space in the College Complex. This information played into the Options studied and the overall net need of spaces on campus.

COST ANALYSIS

Cost analysis of each option breaks down the required cost of new construction, renovation, demolition, and swing space for each option. This information has helped the College and District have a better understanding of the potential cost of each option and has been a tool for community communication and long-term strategy.
