Modera at San Pedro Square has received the 2020 Element of Distinction Golden Nail Award for creating an authentic urban experience with the project’s new pedestrian paseo, dubbed “The Alley @ San Pedro Square.”

In prior years, this award had been presented at the Hammer Theater in front of an audience. Due to current circumstances, the committee chose to hold a virtual acceptance event. Rob Steinberg, FAIA, Chairman of Steinberg Hart, the designer, and Don Peterson, Senior Managing Director at Mill Creek Residential Trust, the developer, received the award from Brian Corbett of Gensler Architects and chair of the Downtown Design Committee of the San Jose Downtown Association. “The committee was impressed by the vision to create this new pedestrian link through the block as part of this development. This purposeful transition space promotes socialization, walkability, and connectivity,” Corbett said.

In Rob Steinberg’s acceptance speech, he stated, “I’m particularly pleased with how the Alley turned out, including the inviting entry on South Almaden. I think the scale of the project is very respectful – where the lower elements of the new building reinforce the existing street wall, and the taller elements of the residential components step back. Lastly, I think the texture – the palette of materials and colors, the pattern – really add a richness to what I feel will be a great urban space to Downtown San Jose.”

Modera has a strong pedestrian presence in the heart of the San Pedro Square District. The project includes 201 residential units, a private third-floor terrace with a BBQ and lounge area, and ground-floor retail and dining, among other amenities. The site is also within walking distance of an abundance of transportation options, including the San Jose Light Rail. Expanding the definition of urban living in San Jose’s urban paseo, the project has successfully bridged people, streets, and experiences, as proven through this award.
