Harvey Mudd College McGregor Computer Science Center, San Jose City College Career Education Complex, Las Palmas Modular earn AIA LA Design Awards

AIA Los Angeles has awarded three of Steinberg Hart’s projects with the 2021 AIALA Design Awards and Next LA Awards. The AIALA Design Award recognizes the design excellence of the most significant completed projects in the country, while the AIALA Next LA Award recognizes unbuilt projects on the board. The projects were awarded by typology, followed by the award level – with Honor being the highest.

For the AIALA Design Awards, Steinberg Hart earned an Honor level award for the Harvey Mudd College, Scott A. McGregor Computer Science Center in the education category. The 37,000 SF, 3-story computer science center provides new space for Harvey Mudd College’s computer science program and a vibrant area for project-based learning via a permanent makerspace.

Steinberg Hart was also recognized for two AIALA Next LA Awards, with an Honor award for Las Palmas Modular in the commercial/mixed-use category. Las Palmas Modular is a 200-unit, 117,250 SF volumetric steel modular project in the heart of Hollywood, featuring 15,000 SF of retail and restaurant space and large rooftop terraces that provide expansive views. In addition, the San Jose City College Career Education Complex was awarded the Merit honors in the education category. The 90,000 SF complex will provide various programs, including flexible active learning classrooms, tech-rich labs for skilled workers, health sciences, business information systems, faculty offices, student support spaces, lecture halls, cafes, and dining areas.

The awards were announced live on October 28th at the SoFi Stadium, with over 500 guests in attendance. Following November 1st, a virtual event was hosted, providing a deeper look into the winning projects, where the teams could accept the awards and speak on behalf of their accomplishments.
