Steinberg Hart Breaks Ground on 90,000 SF Career Education Complex at San Jose City College

SAN JOSE, Calif. (September 29, 2022) –The design-build team of international architecture firm Steinberg Hart and general contractor Flint Builders today broke ground on the new 90,000-square-foot San Jose City College’s Career Education Center. The new state-of-the-art Career Education Complex is designed to foster student success with career-focused learning, giving future leaders an aspirational environment for today that will help them exceed their goals for tomorrow. The complex includes the renovation of an existing 30,000-square-foot structure, construction of which is already underway.

The Career Education Complex is the flagship project of the San José – Evergreen Community College (SJECC) District’s Measure X, a $748 million bond program intended to fund capital improvement projects throughout the 303-square-mile district, which includes San Jose City College (SJCC) and Evergreen Valley College. The project will define a quadrant of campus focused on students taking career education courses and serve to welcome the broader SJCC community.

The completed facility will provide space for a variety of programs, including flexible active learning classrooms, tech-rich labs for skilled workers, health sciences, business information systems, and campus IT disciplines, faculty offices, student support spaces, lecture halls, cafe and dining areas. These programs are distributed over four levels and connected through a vertical network of outdoor terraces, multi-story biophilic gardens, and a unifying central atrium that welcomes the campus and surrounding community. The design creates an architectural connection to the neighboring renovated structure, which will contain programs dedicated to facilities management, iron workers, building systems, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and general classroom and lab spaces.

Rob Barthelman, Partner-in-Charge at Steinberg Hart, said, “In alignment with our own mission, Steinberg Hart is thrilled to see the Vision of the San Jose City College Career Education Complex coming to light. This project will ensure that San Jose’s students and faculty have the ability to inspire and learn in a state-of-the-art facility focused on career training and placement, as well as providing the best pathway to four-year colleges and universities. The facility will be an example to other institutions, providing our area’s major employers with the talent, thinking, and skill desired to propel innovation.”

The highly sustainable project is Net-Zero ready and includes a number of energy-focused measures to assist the college and district in its goals around sustainability and carbon neutrality.

The Career Education Complex reflects a shift in how community institutions view and implement career-focused academic programs, which are evolving to create a more holistic educational continuum that connects various disciplines as they continue to blend together. The design of these buildings is intended to create an environment that fuels interconnectivity, decreases compartmentalization, and stimulates more engaged learning, leading to higher levels of student success.

The complex is expected to be delivered in October of 2024. Click here to learn more about the project and its design.
