Steinberg Hart Releases Guide to Converting Hotels to Housing

Steinberg Hart has released a guide to facilitate and inform developers, property owners, and civic leaders as they consider the opportunities and challenges of converting hotels to housing. The guide discusses technical challenges, building code considerations, entitlement limitations, and design opportunities that a hotel conversion presents, as well as key considerations when evaluating a given hotel property. In addition, the document includes case studies and sample unit plans.

Steinberg Hart President & CEO, David Hart, writes, “We should look at repositioning hotels to help in addressing the housing shortage as a long-term solution. By leveraging these existing assets, affordable, high-quality housing can be provided five times faster on average than new construction, and at one third the cost.”

The guide was unveiled at Los Angeles Business Council’s 19th Annual Mayoral Housing, Transportation & Jobs Summit, hosted in partnership with the Office of Mayor Eric Garcetti. David Hart spoke on the paper in a panel session entitled, “Scaling Cost-Effective, Replicable, & Streamlined Housing Solutions”.
