ProjectsSteinberg Hart Selected to Design $112 Million Career Education Complex at San Jose City College
SAN JOSE, Calif. (September 22, 2020) –The design-build team of international architecture firm Steinberg Hart and general contractor Flint Builders today announced that they have been selected to design a $112 million Career Education Complex at San Jose City College. The project comprises the renovation of an existing 40,000-square-foot structure, as well as the construction of a new 85,000-square-foot building. This state-of-the-art complex is being designed to support authentic learning and student success in academic pursuits and in the local economy.
The Career Education Complex is the flagship project of the San José – Evergreen Community College (SJECC) District’s Measure X, a $748 million bond program intended to fund capital improvement projects throughout the 303-square-mile district, which includes San Jose City College (SJCC) and Evergreen Valley College. The project will define a quadrant of campus focused on students taking career education courses and serve to welcome the broader SJCC community.
The new building will house classrooms, computer labs and program-specific labs focused in medical, business, and information disciplines, as well as offices, student support spaces, social spaces, and food service. The adjacent building, which houses industrial labs and classrooms that also serve the Career Education department, will be modernized to extend the useful life of the building. These structures will be related to one another functionally and aesthetically to form one complex, joined by a cross-yard connection designed for outdoor collaboration and learning.
Rob Barthelman, Principal-in-Charge at Steinberg Hart, said, “This project aligns with Steinberg Hart’s long-term focus on higher education, exemplifying the positive impact of community colleges in the workplace and current and developing industries, and reflecting the evolution of career education in training for a diverse range of fields. The Career Education Complex will be designed to foster student success in career training and placement, which has become just as important as four-year college placement. Moreover, the complex will enable the college to cultivate an even more powerful connection with the local community, including major area employers such as Adobe, Cisco, and Google, who stand to benefit from the talents of SJCC Career Education graduates.”
The Career Education Complex reflects a shift in how community institutions view and implement career-focused academic programs, which are evolving to create a more holistic educational continuum that connects various disciplines as the world beyond continues to blend together. The design of these buildings is intended to create an environment that fuels interconnectivity, decreases compartmentalization and stimulates more engaged learning, leading to higher levels of student success.
Katia McClain, Managing Principal for Steinberg Hart’s San Jose office, said, “Steinberg Hart has been an active member of the San Jose community since the 1950s, and this project reflects an expansion of the work we’ve been doing with the SJECC District for more than 20 years. We have designed multiple projects throughout the region and continue to work closely with organizations like the Silicon Valley Leadership Group and the Community College to Career initiative to support the academic pursuits of SJECC District students through internships and other activities. This history and our local relationships uniquely qualify us to understand the needs of the community and deliver a project that is designed to foster greater learning outcomes.”
The design process has commenced, with phased construction anticipated to begin in June 2021. The complex is expected to be delivered in January 2024.
